Valerian

There is good scientific proof that Valerian treats insomnia and evidence shows that it is most effective in reducing the time it takes to fall asleep. It also has the advantage of not having any significant side effects like the “morning after” dullness experienced by some medications. Valerian also relieves symptoms of anxiety and stress. Several studies have indicated that Valerian has effects similar to benzodiazepines, however further research is required. Valerian has a mild herbal sedative effect reducing the time it takes to fall asleep and may also reduce stress and anxiety during the day. It is most effective when regularly taken over several weeks. There has been no evidence of adverse side effects and physical addiction is highly unlikely. Taking high doses during the day (over 2000mg+) could contribute to drowsiness so care is needed if driving or operating heavy machinery.
