Getting of the Rollercoaster

10/4/11

Winter isn’t here yet, but I can certainly smell it coming. Had to put on sweat pants over my boxers when I got up the other morning. On the positive side bed is a much cosier place and the cooler nights are more conducive to sleep. There have been the first days of torrential rain that have cramped my training “style”, but that is really no excuse. Most of the milestones I had set for myself have not been realised primarily due to laziness and a couple of weeks of being a little under the weather.

I have given myself another good talking to. It was something along the lines of – “Well 25% of the year has gone and what I have got to show? In 7 weeks I will be riding one of the iconic climbs of the Tour de France and One Tree Hill is causing me grief. It’s time to harden up and get with the program”.

My son’s school cycling program has started for the season, so I’ve been going along and riding with the boys as a supervising parent. It was a bit grim to start with as I was riding with a bunch of newbies and felt sure I would be “taken out” by a twelve year old kamikaze, but I have migrated to training with the senior boys, so feeling a lot safer and they will drag the fitness out of me.

Goals are important in terms of focusing your training enthusiasm, so they need to reasonably close to give you that sense of urgency – especially if you are prone to procrastination as I am. With that in mine I’ve entered a time trial event. Nothing special, they are held once a week, but it’s a race with published results. 16 kms of hurt, racing by yourself against the clock. I’ll put the aero handle bars on the bike, don the aero helmet and see just how unfit I really am.
