You Look Good….for your age!l

29/9/10

So when did it happen? Suddenly the Cop that pulled me over for speeding looked about 12 years old and had the cheek to tell me off! The person at the counter discussing cosmetics looked a year or two younger, and was telling what was best for my “look” and that teeth grinding favorite expression (not) “for my age”. I then thought of getting a fitness coach. But after discussing diet and exercise with a slim, over enthusiastic evangelist of about 14 – I decided against it. Who the hell do they think they are!

So something’s shifted in my perspective of those around me. Everyone at about my age looks a bit younger than me. All the others who are really younger, look like children but with that irritating air of precocious confidence. Is it a touch of arrogance or a condescending attitude, or is it just me? I nearly told that Cop to just naff off and go home to mummy! Even my GP looks like he is barely out of the sandpit! So when did all these babies start guiding and directing the action in and around my life!

After thinking about it, I realized it was a slow insidious process that started in my late 40’s. The first inkling came when I was waiting to be served at a bar in a hotel. I never waited for anything in my youth. Barmen fell over themselves and waiters continuously asked, “are you being served?” Long gone are those hazy, wild and lazy days of perpetual perfection.

Now I patiently wait, desperately hoping someone will notice me. Surrounded by sweet young things, I am now ignored, banished to he confines of the flotsam and jettisoned into the too hard and be dammed basket. Shuffling forward to get direct eye contact with the frenzied barman made no difference – I remained in the shadows. Some how I had become invisible, ghost walking in my own skin. Faded, sagging and older skin…hairs where there shouldn’t be and none where there should!

I get it – getting older than 40, and worse, older than 50 begins that slippery slop to sidelined hell. I am the eldest of four children so I am an expert at attention seeking behaviours. I’ll show them!!

Banishing carbs to once a day and sugars to the margins of my existence – I’ve started jogging and walking. Well I did start some years ago with a plan that the jogging would eventually overtake the walking and I would be able to last the distance. So am still in the starter’s blocks for that. Life really seems back to front. As you get older you need to eat less and exercise more. Is this the gradual dissention into purgatory my new reality? By the time I’m 90 I’ll be living on half a glass of water and jogging 24 hours a day! What about chocolate and the sofa? So I TRY to get regular exercise and TRY to eat a nutritious balanced diet and I take the supplements we designed – rich in minerals and anti-aging antioxidants to ensure we preserve our good health for a lot longer. Just need a pill now to make the Cop and the barman look older! www.healthscript.co.nz

True Confessions of a Sugar Addict!

23/9/10

I woke up this morning with that dull pain behind the eyes, a headache, aching joints, slight nausea, and knew I had gone way too far with my evil indulgence last night. So while I absolutely believe in good nutrition and health supplements to get the best out of your body and mind – I am also only human. So I try to be good …but I always slide back into my life long addiction to sugar. Even the word sounds enticing – shhhhhoooogaaaaaah!

I reckon sugar's as addictive as tobacco – I tried that in my youth and kicked the habit easily. But my addiction to sugary sweets and lollies is every present. I went through a phase of trying to go cold turkey and NOT buy any fruit jellies, marshmallows, toffee, liquorice, chocolates – well, you name it – anything sweet.  Did it work? NO. I resorted to melting butter, brown sugar and golden syrup together – adding a dash of vinegar and making my own toffee. Craving the taste, enhanced by the delightful smell of the ingredients bubbling away. By the time it was ready, I was so desperate to eat it, I consumed the whole lot! Back to the sugar hangover! The last time I did this – was about a year ago – and I resolved to always keep sweets in the house.

The thing is  - I'll working, watching TV or doing something around the house and I can hear those sweets. They are constantly calling out to me “hey Nicky, come on…just one – no one will know!” Once I have one I usually finish off the packet – yeah seriously addictive behaviours! But I have the symptoms – is there any rehab centre for people like me? I know the lollies are in the pantry and even if I hide them (yes I confess – I keep a secret stash away from my husband’s greedy kids)! I have a friend who keeps chocolate biscuits hidden in her nicker drawers (pardon Le Pun), so her kids won’t find them. I knew someone who used to hide chocolate bars in the vegetable bin in the fridge and got caught red-handed. “Mum what are you doing?” Mum said some garble resembling the word “nothing” but her mouth was choka full….so the child responded, “I can smell chocolate,” this from an eight year old! So I know I am not the only one out there….but have finally decided to come clean.

Someone said to me I would loose the sweet tooth (what? Only one tooth???? – yeah right) when I get older. Well how much older do I have to get!

My name is Nicky and I am an addict.

I have been an addict for at least 50 years so it is a fully ingrained obsession. I have tried everything.  Someone said to me that a craving for sweet things means your body lacks protein. But I eat meat! Maybe not enough – I don’t eat meat every day, so I fried a thick piece of lean fillet and ate it with a lovely salad and baked potato. About 30 minutes later I ate half a packet of fruit jellies – washed down with a cup of tea. No I don’t take sugar in my tea (and for some years I told myself that this was why I needed sugar in sweets).  Yeah – rationalization goes with the addictive personality too!

Of course like all addicts I blame my mother. Why not? Isn’t that the reason mother’s are on the planet!  It was a treat on a Friday night while growing up, to munch through chocolates and bags full of sweets while we watched TV. Sometimes the sugary leftovers would be finished off on a rainy Sunday afternoon in front of an old black and white cowboy rerun.

One of my Uncles is a dentist and he said it is far better to binge on sweets and get it over with, than eat a couple a day, every day, and have the sugar against your teeth. Naturally, I agree with him.

My middle son was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic when he is was 17. I knew it must’ve come from my over indulgence in pregnancy! I haven’t told him that. He’s now 29 and I don’t want him blaming his mother! I do remember trying to control what I ate when pregnant but mostly I just hoovered up any food put in front of me!

I have modified my hit rate recently by only buying those sweets made from real fruit juices and all natural – I love them…but I KNOW they are not good for me but at least I have reduced the levels of bad colourants, preservatives and additives running around my system.  I also know that sugar makes your body’s cells “gluey” and is just not good for you in every sense of the meaning. Not to mention increasing my risk of diabetes, but I reckon my pancreas is all muscled up from its huge insulin generating workouts over the years that it  can tough out anything I throw at it……so far so good! My body weight remains thin and steady, but somehow I just can’t kick the sugar habit!

Right starting to feel a bit better – after my second mug of warm lemon water – flushing out all the evilness! I won’t be eating any sweets ever again! ….well for a day or two. If I remember to take my mineral rich supplements I manage to reduce my sugar cravings – so clearly something is missing!  I need to take my own medicine!

Get the Good Oil

16/9/10

So you want to feel alive, fitter and more energized but most things you try don’t make much difference? The problem could be your starting point. Think of each new day as a renewal – starting again. Apart from psychological benefits – how about thinking of your body and physical health in that way too. Block out the wayward chocolate bar or extra spoon of caramel sauce of yesterday and start with a clean slate. Today is a NEW day – so how can you start it off in a way that is going to allow your body to get the best out of the health supplements and food you eat?

Here’s what I do – and it makes a HUGE difference

As soon as I wake up I drink a mug of warm water (not hot and not cold), half boiled with just a squeeze of lemon juice – you don’t need much. It has an alkaline effect on your digestive system and helps trigger your metabolism. I sometimes drink two mugs before I eat anything. Why?

Think of your body like a machine – you put all kinds of things in it at the top end and it extracts what it needs and waste is eliminated. You flush out other mechanical systems before loading up more things in the works, so why not do the same for your body? The warm water and lemon flush through your digestive tract, after your body has spent all night processing yesterday’s meals! And drink! It flushes through your kidneys and digestive system ready for the new day’s onslaught. This stimulates your metabolism, clears out your system and kick starts your digestion.

So when you’re ready for breakfast – drink cold pressed, virgin organic olive oil (so there’s been no chemicals or heating to damage nutrients, during processing). Now this is the tough part. You need about a tablespoonful or a small shot glass for those with an iron constitution. It’s a bit like your mother or grandmother used to do with cod liver oil but these days with conflicting evidence, fish allergies and mercury in the food chain, olive oil is making a come back! Have breakfast or a hot drink ready to help the oil go down!!

Why take Olive Oil? It’s relatively easy and cheap to buy and while some of you may cook with it or put it on your salad (which helps), it isn’t really working its magic in this clean uninhibited way. One of the most obvious benefits is elimination – clearing the bowl in a gentle and non-chemical way. Easy and not gut wrenching or unpredictable!!

But more importantly, and not many people realize this, Olive Oil is an anti-inflammatory. Olive leaf has great bacteria fighting properties and raises your immunity, but it’s the oil itself, where real magic starts to happen! It’s just so freely available that the really good news about Olive Oil is often over looked. Just in case you don’t believe me I am going to quote the research links (below) too – so you can see the background to this marvelous food!

Ref: It’s Eat Smart, Stay Well by Susannah Lyle (Bateman)

Olive Oil is very rich in monounsaturated oleic acid, which naturally promotes cardiovascular health. The fruit and oil contain many phenolic compounds plus Squalene – most of these compounds are more concentrated within extra virgin olive oil for the obvious reasons stated above. Olive Oil promotes HDL (good cholesterol) production and reduces LDLS (the bad kind). However, you do need both to function – it’s the levels of each and the ratio between them that can cause concern. The fruit is rich is anticacinogenic properties and rich in Vit E and carotenoids too. Of course cholesterol is your body’s response to inflammation in your circulatory system and this is where Olive Oil comes into its own.

Olive Oil is also rich in hydroxtyrosols which has anti-inflammatory activities and has been compared to those of Ibuprofen (a NSAID) in their efficacy. As antioxidants, they have been reported to be more powerful than quercetin and epicatechins. They also have antibacterial activities against several intestinal and respiratory bacteria, and are anti-virals. The quantity of hydroxytyrosols is greatest in virgin olive oil, and it is better if not heated. They give the oil its peppery aroma and flavor.

Long-term, regular consumption of Olive Oil can lead to significant cardiovascular protection. Oleic acid may inhibit a gene, particularly prevalent in breast cancer, that otherwise can increase the growth of cancer cells, It also gives up to 50-fold increase in efficacy of Herceptin, and >1000 fold sensitization to cells that have acquired resistance to Herceptin. There is a strong synergistic interaction between oleuropein and Herceptin. Although olive oil is mostly monounsaturated, it canincrease incorporation of omega 3 oils into membranes (compared to Omega 6 linoleic) thus helping restore the omega 3 : omega 6 balance.

But wait – there’s more…..
Several studies and ongoing research listed below provide more details around the protecting benefits of Olive Oil.
By Stephen Daniells, 03-Aug-2010

An olive extract rich in hydroxytyrosol may protect neurons in the brain from the normal deterioration associated with aging, suggests a new study.

Hydroxytyrosol was found to protect brain cells from the detrimental effects of oxidative stress when exposed to ferrous ion, and may offer a neuroprotective ingredient to slow the decline in cognitive performance that occurs naturally with age, according to findings published in Pharmacological Research.
Hydroxytyrosol is thought to be the main antioxidant compound in olives, and believed to play a significant role in the many health benefits attributed to olive oil. Previous research has linked the compound to cardiovascular benefits, with reductions in LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol. Data has also suggested the compound may boost eye health and reduce the risk of against macular degeneration.
Researchers from the University of Frankfurt used Genosa I+D’s Hytolive ingredient, and the findings were welcomed by the Spanish company. In an email with NutraIngredients-USA, Genosa’s Carlos Peña said: “This is the second study that confirms the neuro-protection activity of Hytolive, by protecting and preventing neurons and brain from deterioration associated to degenerative diseases.

“In a previous study it was demonstrated that Hytolive protected dissociated brain cells (in vitro and ex-vivo) after subchronic oral administration. This second study has confirmed that the active principle is natural hydroxytyrosol. This means that cytoprotective effects in PC12 cells (a commonly used neuronal-like cell culture model) are likely due to hydroxytyrosol present in Hytolive and not a combination of compounds,” added Peña.
The Frankfurt-based scientists tested the efficacy of the hydroxytyrosol-rich extract in vitro on cells exposed to both oxidative or nitrosative stress. Cells were exposed to the hydroxytyrosol-rich ingredient and then subjected to the stress.

Results showed that the olive oil compound reduced the cell damaging effects of the oxidative and nitrosative stress in a dose-dependent manner, with higher doses providing increased protection.
Furthermore, the effects appeared to be related to the hydroxytyrosol-content of the extract, said the researchers.

“With respect to hydroxytyrosol, its incorporation into LDL which are transported into the brain, might provide a physiological route for hydroxytyrosol to enter brain cells,” added the researchers.

Phenolic compounds in olive oil could help repress genes linked to inflammation, thereby providing a molecular basis for the reduction of heart disease risk already linked to the consumption of olive oil.
The study, published in Biomed Central (BMC) Genomics, tested the impact of consuming an olive-oil rich breakfast in people suffering from metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of conditions linked to heart disease and diabetes.

“This study shows that intake of virgin olive oil based breakfast, which is rich in phenol compounds is able to repress in vivo expression of several pro-inflammatory genes, thereby switching activity of peripheral blood mononuclear cells to a less deleterious inflammatory profile,” wrote the researchers.

“These results provide at least a partial molecular basis for reduced risk of cardiovascular disease observed in Mediterranean countries, where virgin olive oil represents a main source of dietary fat.”
Previous studies had shown that the consumption of olive oil with a high phenolic content could help reduce pro-inflammatory, pro-oxidant and pro-thrombotic markers compared with the consumption of low phenols virgin olive oil.

The researchers of the current study set out to investigate whether the beneficial effects of olive oil could be linked to gene activity. Their approach was to identify expression changes in genes which could be mediated by olive oil phenol compounds.

The study, which followed a double-blinded, randomized, crossover design, involved 20 patients suffering from metabolic syndrome. After an initial six-week wash-out period during which participants did not take supplements, vitamins or drugs, they were fed two virgin olive oil-based breakfasts with high (398 ppm) and low (70 ppm) content of phenolic compounds.
All participants consumed a similar low-fat, carbohydrate rich diet during the study period to eliminate potential impacts resulting from their usual dietary habits.

After tracking the expression of over 15,000 human genes in blood cells during the after-meal period, the researchers identified 79 genes that were underexpressed (or turned down) by the high phenol olive oil, and 19 genes that were overexpressed (or turned up).

“Many of those genes have been linked to obesity, high blood-fat levels, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Importantly, several of the turned-down genes are known promoters of inflammation, so those genes may be involved in ‘cooling off’ inflammation that often accompanies metabolic syndrome,” writes the US Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS), which was involved in the study.

The researchers concluded that their findings strengthen the relationship between inflammation, obesity and diet, and provide evidence at transcription level of control of healthy effects derived from virgin olive oil consumption in humans.

However, they added that “it would be interesting to evaluate whether these beneficial effects are maintained after prolonged feeding and if these effects are carried out by one or several olive oil phenolic compounds, or if they are consequence of a synergic effect of the total phenolic fraction.”

Insomnia Anyone? 8 Pragmatic Tips to get You to Sleep

10/9/10

Sleep – it’s such a simple word and just sounds so easy to do. But with our frenetic lives and busy minds the act of sleeping seems to evade nearly every second person I talk to.

So here are 8 tips to help ease you into a good night’s rest:

(1) Don’t accept the old adage of 8+ hours sleep a night is “normal”. Everyone is different and listening to your own body and its needs is a good starting point. New research says that this is simply not true and certainly as we get older, we are able to function very well on far less – usually around 5 or 6 hours. Changes in lifestyle and fluctuations in a hormones tend to shorten the hours of deep sleep we get to enjoy. As we start hitting our 40’s some people start to notice sleep becoming problematic. But don’t fret and add additional stress to your so-called inability to sleep. Go with it and adjust yourself to less sleep – that in itself takes the pressure off.

(2) Some people find short “power naps” during the day make a huge difference. I say bring back the Spanish Siesta and make it a world-wide policy! But there is reality and of course work! So often siesta’s are impossible – but use your lunch break or afternoon tea break to sit in a meeting room (book it first!), where you can close your eyes, slow your breathing and relax all the muscles in your face, shoulders, arms and body – work your way through your body to completely unwind. Focus on your breathing. Just 15 mins will rejuvenate you to face the afternoon – especially if you’ve had a disrupted night’s sleep.

(3) Avoid drinking any stimulants after about 4pm. No more alcohol, coffee or tea. I know its nice to unwind with a beer or vino when you get home at night. Usually one drink wouldn’t do any harm, but if you are trying to ‘train” your body to sleep better, it is wise to give alcohol (and cigarettes) a miss in the later afternoons and evenings too. Avoid sugar snacks as well – ummm I can hear you saying, the evenings are going to be pretty bleak. But it’s not forever, recalibrating your sleeping patterns may take some effort. Having said that, I also refer back to point (1) – so it depends how your levels of exhaustion are. If you are sleeping shorter but wake up feeling alive – then just go with it. But if you are having constantly disturbed sleep and struggling through the day – then you may need to look at taking on some of these healthy sleeping tips.

(4) I hate to say it – and I know most of you are going to roll your eyes, but exercise. Just a brisk walk for 20-30 mins will make all the difference. Just don’t do it at night – again the increased heart rate and oxygen levels will stimulate your body and mind and you will again struggle to sleep. But if you can do it in the morning – before work or over the lunch break (if you aren’t power napping!), then you will again, contribute to relaxing and unwinding in the evenings. Our bodies are for activity most of the time. Think of cavemen – they hardly sat still – nomadic wandering, hunting and food gathering so their bodies were in constant movement.  With most of us glued to computers (not to mention the mesmerizing screen that tires your eyes – and some research says changes the chemical make-up of your brain, contributing to lower serotonin levels (that’s the hormone that acts as an anti-depressant) – no wonder many of us are overwhelmed and stressed! So yes – get out in the sunlight (valuable Vitamin D – critical for good health), and fresh air. Stretch your body and clear your mind – you’ll be amazed how much better you’ll cope with a busy day. And how much better you’ll sleep by just a minimal amount of regular exercise. Mix it up too – cycle, walk, jog, swim – arrange to meet a friend and walk and talk – it is over before you know it. But whichever way you do it – move it and after a few weeks you will feel better, be fitter and sleep better.

(5) This is so simple but is often overlooked in much of the advice I have read about sleep. Just put a notepad and pen beside your bed. When you wake up and have that swirling of all the “must do’s” and “must remembers”  - just write them down. If you can't turn a light on as your partner is sleeping…..just write! It will ease your busy mind and enable your brain to switch off and let you sleep. Having done this most of my life, I sometimes can’t make out what I’ve written and I realize it just doesn’t matter. Remember don’t sweat the small stuff – if you can’t remember it – well it can't be something that critical and no one is going to die if you forget this. I have at times written 2 pages of notes – all numbered (that’s when I’ve managed to have the light on, at 3am  of course), and later in the cold light of day I have looked down the list. Some have been things I already have in my diary or to-do list. Others are complete cobblers! What the hell was I thinking? The answer? Well we are in a kind of wakeful sleep – or somewhere between the two. Our worries are exaggerated, our thoughts converge with other extraneous things – more often than not – the lists are useless. But here is the rub. Write it. This allows you to let those amazing and insightful thoughts and worries go. Your head will hit the pillow in the full confidence that your gems of wisdom are safely written on that notebook. Believe me – this really does allow you to fall asleep again if you are still tired.

(6) Someone once said to me “use the magic hours” – yeah right! But seriously if you really feel wide awake and can’t sleep. Then don’t – again refer to point (1). Get up – write those emails, lists, cook tonight’s dinner, bake bread, do your internet Google thing. Start writing a blog or a book – plan out something you can do. They really are magic hours. There is no phone, no kids, no noise and no interruptions. If you are creative – and I mean this in the broadest way – most of us are – utilize this precious time to create and develop plans and thinking. Plan a project you’ve always wanted to do. Use this wonderful, silent early morning hours to plan trips, creative projects, paint, sculpt or sought out all those bills and papers for the taxman (now that’s something I would avoid!) In these few extra early morning hours you can be highly productive. Sometimes (when on a real roll), you can be more productive than an entire day. Some people I know use this time to write reports for work or catchup with reading etc. Invariably – their minds are clear after sleep (albeit shorter than the so-called 8+hour requirement), and with uninterrupted focus they’re able to whip up a summary or business case in 20% of the time it would take during a normal working day. I believe we should be able to negotiate time in lieu from the day job as compensation for being so bloody brilliant – but then that’s up to your conversations with your boss! It’s handy if you are the boss – give yourself a longer walk over lunchtime! Whatever works – make your work life balance more about you and less about the platitudes bandied around by big business!

(7) Don’t go to bed hungry. If you have children you tend to eat dinner around 6pm so by 10.30pm bedtime, you’re starving as dinner is fully digested. Hunger can keep you awake as easily as feeling cold will. Again, it’s all about moderation. Don’t sit down to another whole plateful of food – going to sleep on full stomach is very bad for your body and digestion. But have some light snack, healthy nut bars, fruit, or a slice of whole grain toast with Marmite. Try and do this an hour or two before bedtime – enough to take the edge off so you sleep more soundly. Some people swear by warm milk (or hot chocolate) and some early studies do say there “seems” to be some evidence that people tend to relax and sleep better. Personally I dislike milk – and the thought of drinking a warm mug full before bedtime makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up – but that’s just me. Give it a go if you enjoy milk – I believe in trying anything if it has a chance of helping improve your sleep patterns. Or course, remember you will have to get up and pee in the night – yeah that old chestnut! So pace yourself and your volumes and with testing and trialing you can work out what’s best for you.

(8) Of course many people with serious disrupted sleep take sleeping pills. In some cases this is necessary but they are chemical and they are addictive so please follow your doctors orders and the instructions on the bottles. Also look to the root causes of your inability to sleep. Address the stresses in your life – get help if necessary. If you are a menopausal female – disrupted sleep goes with the territory and can add to the stress at this time of your life. Following these tips, and also taking a sleep supplement can be a godsend. I tried out various herbal and vitamin sleep supplements before designing our own PM Relax & Sleep formula. Our  Naturopath- Bio Chemist consultant who checked and verified our formulas says; “I believe there are many things at work with the PM formula – Valerian helps get you to sleep and switch off the mind. The 5HTP helps keep you asleep, especially if you wake 2-3 hours after going to bed. The B6 Pyridoxine helps keep you asleep if you are waking at 5am (adrenal exhaustion) and the Magnesium is an all-round relaxant. I am a great believer in simplicity in a formula – but careful combining too”. Women Over 40 Should Read This!

4/9/10

The LA Times (USA) has just written an interesting piece about women struggling with menopausal symptoms. Not just hot flushes, and forgetfulness but a whole gamut of issues including mental cloudiness and feeling down.

The good news is, as King Solomon once said: " this will also pass" but of course nothing remains the same! But the support of good friendships makes all the difference - make sure you nurture them and care for one another. Keep involved with life and everything around you so you enjoy everyday and Feel Alive!

Making a Difference!

2/9/10

It’s been no problem getting Early Adopters to give it a go! They’re happy to try and buy our products because they’re risk takers (in the minority of course!) of those willing to take on something new and give it a go. But a couple of people have asked: What makes AM and PM different? Isn’t there a similar brand on the market?

No there isn't. It seems the right time to explain what sets us apart from the average health supplement. Firstly there are some very expensive imported brands ($312 from the USA for a month’s supply of “Health Pack”), which offers sachets of 6 pills you gulp down in the morning and the same 6 you gulp down again at night.

Seems odd to us that you would take energy boosting vitamins and antioxidants to get yourself through the day and the same combo again at night. With broccoli powder and tomato extract – it made us wary. Our research shows that most vitamin takers are females with an above average intelligence (who also buy for the men in their families), but are concerned about health and nutrition. They are aware and try their best to get a balanced, nutritional diet for themselves and their families. Tomatoes and Broccoli would be pretty normal fare in the average vitamin takers diet – so we didn’t put that in our pills. Our AM Feel Alive morning formula has ingredients to boost energy, rich in minerals, trace elements and amino acids that could be missing from some diets. We’ve added Taurine to support mental clarity and alertness. We’ve had some great feedback from university students and stressed professionals who are under pressure from impending exams or huge workloads, had trouble concentrating.

Taurine helps reduce the internal “noise” in an overactive brain – it has a calming effect so you can focus and perform at your best. I don’t know about you, but I know if I'm stressed and rushing around I feel like my head is overloaded with competing lists of things to do, I almost feel the rising anxiety and pressure in my chest and throat.

The good news is that Taurine’s calming effect also regulates your heart beat, so with regular use those symptoms ease. Normally adults have high concentrations of Taurine in their white blood cells, skeletal muscles, the heart and central nervous system. It plays a role in your digestion, and is used to process potassium, calcium and sodium in your body, as well as maintain the integrity of cell membranes.  Of course when under pressure and stress, like many biological functions in the body, your Taurine levels can be compromised. If you want to up your intake naturally too, eat more fish and meat, which also contains Taurine. No severe side effects have ever been associated with Taurine taken as a health supplement.

The other difference with our AM Feel Alive formula is the very high levels of grape seed extract – if not the highest, at 6,000mg per AM capsule. It’s a powerful antixodiant with great anti aging properties and supports your body in getting rid of damaging free radicals. Some supplements focus on Resveratrol which is also a great antioxidant.

Resveratrol is based on high anti-oxidants found in wine but latest research shows it’s not the wine, the grapes or its’ flesh that has the magic health qualities. So it’s no good knocking back a vino after work every night in the hope of staving off mortality! What’s really doing the trick with antioxidant content in grapes is the naturally occurring polyphenolics (PC’s) that are found in grape seeds! “Grape seeds are a particularly rich source of PC’s containing more than any other grape product, such as red, white or rose wine or grape juices…” (Herbs & Natural Supplements; 2007, LBraun & M Cohen pp 397)

Read the labels of the vitamins you have and check the levels of Grape Seed Extract.  After undertaking thorough research we put 6,000mg of this active antioxidant in our Health Script AM FEEL Alive formula along with 23 other active ingredients to boost your energy every day. Will focus on what makes PM Relax & Sleep in my next Blog.
