Are All Multi-vitamins Created Equal?

24/8/10

The answer is of course a resounding NO. Many of the cheaper brands use imported (from China and India mostly), synthetic ingredients – cutting costs and adding to mal-absorption problems and other health risks now well documented in the media.  It’s early days, but we’ve just uploaded some positive customer feedback to our website www.healthscript.co.nz   And of course as soon as it got uploaded we got this email from another happy customer!

24/8/10  "Your product is really great... I took it with an open mind, and the great thing is I haven't touched any of my usual snack "extras.” Basically I expect a lot from the minimum supplements, which I take regularly... so I started with the AM and within a day (usually takes a lot longer to feel effects normally) I felt a difference, but it could be that the PM helps the whole package. I did feel very sleepy the first morning but that's probably because I'm not used to getting sleep assistance.

However, I got a light bout of flu, which skewed my observations slightly, at the same time it may have been the AM/PM that helped me through it very quickly...because I was building and lifting heavy timber all weekend. I'm really impressed, so well done! I haven't felt the need to take any of my other vices.

If the truth be known, I was specifically trying not to be psychosomatic to try and restrict the results to the merits of the product itself and not the mental expectations... and yet I saw a very clear result... and that is only on one cap a day... I'm over 90kg so at the cusp of the two-a-day. I've been aware of my yearly cycles for a long time so I would be able to increase my intake when I'm on a low-ebb. Thanks again Health Script!" Papaya Extract found in our Dual Pack AM Feel Alive supplement helps the digestive system

If you want to see some more serious, fact-based information about the effectiveness of multivitamins – then let’s look at a summary report by the New Zealand Ministry of Health, published in 1999, on the health of New Zealanders at the end of the twentieth century.

It showed that the average life expectancy of males is 74.3yrs and females 79.6 years. This report went on to mention that almost 70% of deaths in our population are still potentially avoidable by primary prevention (promoting good health) and by early intervention measures. Approximately 40% of the factors affecting life expectancy (eg: smoking, alcohol, low fruit and vegetable intake) can be controlled, suggesting that length of life can be extended but that quality of life can be enhanced through better health. The role of nutrition in the prevention of disease and the promotion of wellness shouldn’t be underestimated. Neither should regular exercise and some articles I have read recently mention 20-30 minutes 5-6 days a week. Now that’s not too onerous!! No need to turn exercise into a major stress in your life after all!

Now back to the topic - a recent study suggests that a daily multivitamin/mineral supplementation can improve nutrient status in older adults. Researchers concluded that in addition to “reducing the prevalence of poor nutrient status, the multivitamin appears to have increased several vitamins into a more optimal range relevant to reducing the risk of chronic disease”(1).

Health Scripts AM PM Dual Pack offers breakthrough formulas to support adult nutrition. These bio-available formulas contain all the essential nutrients such as Vitamins A, C, D, E, and all the B’s along with minerals Zinc, Calcium, Magnesium and Selenium as well as 6,000mg of the powerful antioxidant Grape Seed Extract and Papaya Extract for boosting energy and healthy aging.

The AM Feel Alive formula has 24 active ingredients and when used in combination with the PM Relax & Sleep which contains 11 supportive ingredients, the Health Script Dual Pack will ensure you de-stress and enjoy a good night’s sleep to feel recharged for another day – an even distribution of health supplements being regularly delivered to your body throughout a 24 hour cycle.

As we grow older, adults can often suffer from lowered nutrient absorption due to poor digestive processes. The digestive enzymes from Papain (Papaya extract) also help to improve digestion and nutrient availability in this age group.

All the ingredients in our products are listed on our website in the Vitamin Guide, drop-down menu, and you can get more information and scientific research about each of the contents we have used in our products.

Enjoy another good week.

Just a reminder to read the label on the back of the bottles. Please make sure you take AM with or after food as occasionally some people experience nausea taking these vitamins first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. The 24 quality ingredients packed with minerals and antioxidants need food in your stomach to get the most effective absorption.

Please remember to follow the instructions to enjoy the best results - and we are already getting GREAT feedback from a cross section of ages and life stages! All very positive.

Good News about Magnesium

10/8/10

Chocolate! I thought that would get your attention. Magnesium is richly available in Chocolate - so it really is good to have some every day! Just not a slab at a time of course! There are a range of other magnesium rich foods too like leafy green vegetables, pumpkin seeds and seafood, but nothing quite spikes the interest as a few squares of chocolate to keep your magnesium levels healthy!

It's gotta be Good for you!

An essential mineral and vital to good human nutrition, magnesium is intricately involved in a variety of biological functions. In fact, over 300 metabolic reactions carried out in your body require magnesium. Every major biological process, including the synthesis of proteins, and nucleic acids, and the production of cellular energy must have adequate amounts of magnesium in order to function properly. Magnesium also plays a key role in nerve conduction, the electrical stability of cells, muscle contraction, the regulation of vascular tone, and the maintenance of membrane integrity.

Whole foods like, green vegetables, nuts, and unpolished grains, are an excellent source of magnesium. Chlorophyll is the magnesium chelate of porphyrin; which, because of their chlorophyll content, makes green leafy vegetables particularly valuable. Although they contain substantially lower amounts than the foods mentioned above, milk, starches and meats also supply magnesium. Generally, foods that have been processed or refined are poor sources of magnesium.

Because most people’s daily dietary intake of magnesium is less than adequate, many doctors recommend adults take supplemental magnesium each day.
